Child Development

Grade levels 11, 12. Semester course. No prerequisites. This course will help students understand responsibilities involved with parenting and prepare them for parenthood. Parental care, childbirth options, and costs are discussed. Children’s physical, intellectual, and socio-emotional development will be studied. Another area of focus is guidance and discipline. Careers related to this field will also be discussed. A six-week preschool lab experience is the highlight. FCCLA leadership development is integrated in instruction.

Fashions

Grades 10, 11, 12. Semester course. No prerequisites.  It covers the basics of design and fabrics as well as a study of fashion designers. It includes some history of fashion. Wardrobe basics, clothing care, and quality features of clothing will be discussed. Career possibilities, merchandising and advertising will be included.                 Nutrition and Wellness (Foods and Nutrition I)

Grade levels 10, 11, 12. Semester course. No prerequisites. This course focuses on personal and lifestyle choices as they relate to food, fitness, social health, and mental well being. Topics include understanding the need for food, assessing trends in current lifestyle, creating a wellness plan, learning basic meal preparation techniques and planning meals for optimum health. Careers are explored. FCCLA leadership development is integrated in instruction.


Nutrition and Meal Management (Foods and Nutrition II) 

Grade levels 10, 11, 12. Semester course. Prerequisite: Foods I. In this semester course, skills developed the first semester are built upon and include further nutritional evaluation of foods prepared. Attention will be focused on meal service, specialty foods, cultural experiences, work skills, and career opportunities. Leadership is integrated through FCCLA experiences.


Foundations for Living

Grade levels 9, 10, 11, 12. Full year course. No prerequisites. This comprehensive course introduces the student to several different areas of Family and Consumer Science enabling the individual to function independently. Learning experiences cover the areas of personal relationships, career exploration, work readiness, volunteerism, consumer skills, design, clothing selection, food preparation, and child care. FCCLA leadership development is integrated in instruction.


Housing

Grade levels 10, 11, 12. Semester course. No prerequisites. This course is designed to prepare students to make decisions relating to their living environments and to become educated consumers. Instruction will include evaluating needs and values; comparing renting and buying options; identifying housing styles and furniture trends; as well as drawing and evaluating residential or commercial floor plans. Students benefit from practical hands-on experience. Careers related to this field will be discussed. FCCLA leadership development is integrated in instruction.


Interior Design

Grade levels 10, 11, 12. Semester course. No prerequisites. This course covers design principles and elements used to decorate space. Topics include understanding and evaluating floor plans/elevations; selecting materials and furnishings; critiquing rooms; and identifying furniture styles. Personal style as well as budget considerations are addressed. Students benefit from practical experience. Careers related to this field will be explored. Leadership will be integrated into instruction through FCCLA.


Career & Life Planning (Independent Living)

Grade levels 11, 12. Full year course. No prerequisites. This course focuses on enabling individuals to establish and maintain a satisfying living unit beyond their family of origin. Concepts include career planning, relationships, consumer skills, wellness, decision making, problem solving, and/or practical reasoning, all designed to help the learner assume adult roles and functions. FCCLA leadership is included in instruction.


Balancing Career & Family (Marriage & Family)

Grade levels 11, 12. Semester course. No prerequisites. This course examines different aspects of personal and family living. Relationship skills such as decision making, communication, and role expectations are also discussed. Strategies to understand family dynamics are studied. Career options are explored. FCCLA leadership is integrated in instruction.
